2022 Keynote Speaker: LaTosha Brown

The 2022 keynote speaker is LaTosha Brown, cofounder of Black Voters Matter Fund, visionary thought leader and cultural activist. Brown is nationally recognized as the “go-to” expert in Black voting rights and voter suppression, Black women’s empowerment and philanthropy. Her voice is the nexus between the civil rights movement, the Black Power movement and Black Lives Matter.

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is the longest running annual event at Oregon State University focused on social justice and transformative change. 

Celebration Objectives

  • Learn about and reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King and collaboratively envision ways to carry forward his work;
  • Participate in an impactful, inclusive and engaging celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King; and
  • Collaboratively learn about and reflect on the legacy of Dr. King in a way that is relevant in today's context.

NOTE: We will be observing all local health and OSU guidelines related to COVID-19 and we will update you about those protocols closer to the event. In alignment with university policy, proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of this event (in the form of a paper or electronic copy) will be required for attendance. Peace Breakfast

The annual Peace Breakfast, held on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while honoring members of the Oregon State community who carry his message and work forward in the present. The Peace Breakfast is free and open to Oregon State University community members and specially invited guests.

2022 Peace Breakfast Program

 

Peace March

An Oregon State University tradition, the Peace March follows the Keynote and provides an opportunity to join in solidarity with community members and reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of creating transformative change through non-violence. Participants are led across the Corvallis campus on a 1-mile route, from the LaSells Stuart Center to conclude at the Memorial Union for speakers and community.

This event is free and open to the public. Participants are invited to bring signs enforcing Dr. King's messages of non-violence.

Legacy Awards

Each year, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee presents the Legacy Awards to Oregon State University community members who exemplify qualities of service and selflessness.

Recipients of the 2022 awards were announced at the Peace Breakfast on Jan. 17, 2022.

Celebration Events

This year’s event kicks off with the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service—coordinated by Community Engagement & Leadership—on Jan. 15, 2022, and continues with a week-long series of events, including workshops, speakers, service opportunities and other community engagement events hosted by departments and units throughout Oregon State University. These events, envisioned by Oregon State community members to collaboratively learn about, reflect on and carry on the legacy of Dr. King, are an important part of the annual Celebration.

We invite departments, units, offices, organizations and individuals to submit events that advance the objectives of the Celebration. Event submission deadline: Jan. 7, 2022.
