Carina Buzo Tipton to join OID as assistant director for diversity, equity, and inclusion education

Hello Colleagues,

The Office of Institutional Diversity is excited to announce that Carina Buzo Tipton (she/her) has been selected to serve as assistant director for diversity, equity, and inclusion education. She will begin her role on December 30, 2022.

The assistant director for diversity, equity, and inclusion education will help sustain a comprehensive portfolio of educational resources to enable career-long learning for all faculty, staff, and student employees at Oregon State University. The Assistant Director will lead workshops and trainings, facilitate dialogues, and connect learners with educational resources.

Carina brings to this role eight years of DEI consulting work, feminist teaching, and higher education administration experience. Carina first joined the OSU community in August 2013 as a master’s student in the College Student Services Administration program where she was a graduate assistant for the center for civic engagement and residential education. She has since worked at Sonoma State University as a cultural center program coordinator and returned to OSU to serve as Assistant Director of Diversity Initiatives and Programs in University Housing and Dining Services. Currently, Carina is the managing editor of the academic journal, Feminist Formations

Carina also brings a strong academic training. She is a PhD Candidate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at OSU where her research focuses on Feminist Institutional Change. Her dissertation, “Curandera Feminism: Tracing the Possibilities of Healing Institutional Harm”, weaves together familial knowledge, traditional healing practices, and trauma informed feminist pedagogies to integrate the impacts of institutional harm while creating pathways towards futures of accountability and healing. Her publications concern consent work, prison critique, trauma informed pedagogies, Chicane gender representation, and student development.

We are very grateful for the efforts of the search committee, including Katy Ahlvin (search chair), Shoshana Shabazz (search advocate), Pamela Johnson (administrative support), Lizzet Stone, Delfine De Frank, and Coquille Rex. Please join me in welcoming Carina into her new role!

Sincerely,
Jeff K.
